Music From Withim A Rythmic Culture

Dominican music, as we know it today, is the product of diverse cultural influences that have interwoven themselves in the island of Santo Domingo since the ancient Taino songs and dances that were transmitted in that culture from generation to generation. As the years passed by, from the time of the conquest and as the result of different historical circumstances, different musical forms came to the island of Santo Domingo. All were very diverse from each other; from the French contradance to the Italian boat songs and many others. All were assimilated by Dominican culture through the rich musicianship of the African element - the major force in the hybrid musical acculturation process- and all these combined have led to present day Dominican music. Traditional Dominican music has regional particularities. For example, the regions of the Cibao and the South have a marked Spanish influence with tap music variants. Read more...
