Salsa Night: Thursday

Within the belly of Washington Heights sits this fresh upscale half-bar/half-restaurant that caters to the area's large population of professional from the Dominican Republic. From the bar in the front or the candlelit tables in the back, one can enjoy Cafe Largo's variety of bebidas calientes that range from cafe nuestro to a simple capuccino. Drinks at the bar are a bit expensive but well mixed. The place has an excellent share of postres, but one should try their version of flan, which is made without the mass production flavor to which we have grown accustomed to seeing from chain restaurants.

When their personal DJ isn't spinning classic salsa, he changes the pace with an array of world music that many aren't familiar with, but enjoy nonetheless. Some nights Cafe Largo hosts poetry readings, but they are not as systematic as with other places so keep your eyes open. For dinner try the pollo largo or the pollo a la parilla con guacamole. The place offers free delivery and student or office discounts. There is a $10 minimum charge with a credit card.
